We will discuss the following issues that arise for plan sponsors in an IRS or DOL inquiry.

• Discussion of common questions found in investigation letters
• Review of DOL late deposit letters
• Review of DOL closing letters
• Common operational mistakes made by plan sponsors and how to avoid them
• Investment Policy Statements
• Fee Policy Statements and discussion of how fees are paid (understanding 408(2) and 404(a)5 notices)

Grant Halvorsen works for MRP, a qualified plan consulting firm. He consults plan sponsors on plan design, plan investment line ups, fee negotiations and plan operations. He began his career working as a third party administrator for qualified retirement plans. He understands the complexities as well as the importance of accurate plan design, document preparation, trust accounting, compliance testing and completion of annual reporting requirements. He has administered a wide variety of plan arrangements which has allowed him to gain experience in the qualified retirement plan market. He has assisted clients with Department of Labor audits, IRS inquires, correction programs, large plan audits and plan terminations.
 
Grant has received the Enrolled Retirement Plan Agent (ERPA) designation conferred by the IRS. He is a Certified Pension Consultant (CPC), Qualified Pension Administrator (QPA) and Qualified 401(k) Administrator (QKA), designations conferred by the American Society of Pension Professionals and Actuaries. He is currently serving on the board of the Salt Lake Chapter of the Western Pension and Benefits Council. He is part of the technical review board for ASPPA’s Plan Consultant magazine.
